Welcome to The Fun Librarian!

How do we get children excited about reading?  How do we get them excited about exploring a library independently?  By making it FUN!!!

This website is designed to give you ideas on how to make your library program the most fun it can be while equipping your students with the information navigation tools they need most.

Bring your library to LIFE with games and creativity.  In a fun and exciting environment, brimming with interesting materials, students can’t help learning how to explore independently.

Library Skills Line Up Games

Library Skills Line Up is now available through the Upstart Division of Highsmith.  I developed these games to make learning about the most basic and necessary library skills FUN.  Students will get up, move around, problem solve, and learn how to use their library.  I prefer using them on a felt board, but it’s not required.  They are geared for grades K through 5

Here’s how they work.  In each game, students place library skill answer cards under the corresponding header card. The included games are:

Answer This: Reviews the different types of books that are found in a library’s reference section, including the encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas and almanac. Students read a reference question and place it under the type of book they think holds the answer. Includes four header cards and 32 question cards. (More appropriate for the older grades)

Be a Book Buddy: Teaches book care using happy and sad book faces. Students place picture cards under the appropriate header, such as a book bag under the happy book face and a rain cloud under the sad book face. Includes two header cards and 32 picture cards.

Fiction or Nonfiction: Teaches the difference between a book of fiction and a work of nonfiction. Students select a book title card and determine if it should be placed beneath the fiction or the nonfiction header. Includes two header cards and 30 title cards.
